USB 3.0 explained for simple folk.

Scheduled to hit the consumer market in 2010, USB 3.0 — also known as SuperSpeed USB — will deliver a tenfold improvement in data transfer rates while retaining backward compatibility with previous versions and adding new features that will make this communication standard all the more essential to the average consumer. But, speed aside, what changes is the next version of this popular standard going to bring?

Because it has to allow for communication between such a diverse array of devices, the specifications of the USB standard are extremely complex and deal with issues from the high (protocol and supporting software) to the very low (electrical) level, which would make an exhaustive explanation unpractical; it is, however, quite simple to understand on a functional level.
Just like with the Internet, communication between two or more devices via USB is packet-based, which means information always travels on a USB cable in the form of chunks of data of a predefined length (1,500 bytes) rather than as a mere stream of data. The packet header carries information on the destination address and control information which allow for the detection and correction of transmission errors, while the rest of the packet contains the actual data to be transferred.
In order for USB to work on a wide array of devices, USB 2.0 supports three different transfer speeds: Low-speed (1.5 Mbit/s), Full-Speed (12 Mbit/s), and High-Speed (480 Mbit/s) USB. When two devices decide to initiate a data transfer, the host — which acts as the control unit — initiates a polling mechanism to establish which is the highest speed that both ends support, and the transfer then takes places at that rate.
What is going to change with USB 3.0
USB 3.0 will add to the previous three a fourth speed, dubbed SuperSpeed (5 Gbit/s), that will allow for a tenfold improvement in the data transfer rate whenever both ends support it. In order to achieve this, a number of changes had to be made in terms of both the materials used and the internal structure of connectors: for instance, data in new USB 3.0 connectors will be driven by nine, rather than the previous four, wires. In order to guarantee the promised speeds, the maximum cable length will also have to be cut down from 5 to 3 meters to reduce attenuation.
On the consumer level, the main benefit will certainly be the improved speed. As USB-IF President and Chairman Jeff Ravencraft put it during a keynote speech in Tokyo earlier last month, the tremendous transfer rate provided by SuperSpeed will mean that it will be personal computer hard drives, rather than the USB standard, that act as the bottleneck with the next specification.
But there will be other, more subtle advantages as well, particularly on the architectural level: power efficiency will be greatly improved thanks to the introduction of an idle status; the need for polling will be eliminated thanks to a few protocol changes, which will in turn eliminate the time overhead needed by the host to establish the transfer rate to be used; and finally, USB 3.0 is also said to be highly scalable and ready for further transfer rate improvements in the next future.
According to the timeline proposed by Ravencraft, the initial deployment of USB 3.0 devices should start in mid 2009, while its industry deployment is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2010. The Japanese NEC has released a statement saying it aims to produce its first USB 3.0 controller by the end of the month, initially priced at USD$15.

Flash Drives: You get what you pay for.

Flash Drives: You get what you pay for.

USB Flash Drives are a great way to conveniently store, transport and transfer data. For some smart companies, they are a great promotional marketing choice. However, if you go looking for the absolute cheapest price on promotional flash drives … all you may find is trouble. Remember, you get what you pay for. Do you really want your name on a piece of junk? Here's what you need to know.
The memory chips that are the heart and soul of a flash drive are divided into 4 different grades: A, B, C and D. The one to avoid at all costs is Grade D.

Grade A:

Tier 1. These are premium chips with the manufacturer's name and serial number imprinted on the chip itself. These chips are produced by manufacturers such as Samsung and Hynix. They are the most expensive, but also the most reliable offering a lifetime warranty. Our supplier only uses these types of chips.

Grade B:

Tier 1 OEM flash chips. These are made by the same legitimate chip manufacturers but do not carry the manufacturer's brand name on them. These chips are as reliable as Grade A, but mat not carry the same warranty. A and B are both fine to use.
Here is where the quality issues and problems begin. While these are some of the least expensive flash drives, that low price comes with a very high failure rate.

Grade C:

These are called recycled or reclaimed flash chips (not to be confused with the recycled plastic housings). These chips are considered waste from the "wafer" that the original manufacturer does not want and considers to be garbage. These have a 30% - 40% failure rate. They are sold by the pound.

Grade D:

Suppliers of drives containing these chips will imprint an original manufacturer's name on Grade C chips. These guys think they are real smart. It may read Samsung or Hynix, etc. but they are junk.

Apple buys 10 million 8 GB's

About Apple, what are you doing? Just as we saw at that time the law last year in preparation for the new 3G Apple iPhone and iPod touch update, Apple is placing huge orders NAND chip which can lead to supply the demand in other tier-one suppliers. This time we have DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market for flash memory – specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders “100000000 8GB(8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mainly from Samsung Electronics. It two times the volume of orders submitted last year. Small memory modules are then played during production in the larger 16GB, 32GB, and so on capabilities we expect to find in our portable electronic devices. Genuine Verses Fake Counterfeit USB Flash Drives – A Guide – USB Flash Chips Used In USB Flash Drives – Grades A B C D

Is the quality or grade of a flash chip important to a usb flash drive, memory card or MP Player? Is it a factor in the wholesale and retail price? Does it really matter? What does a genuine usb flash drive from a brand name use, MP Players and memory cards. What do generic no name brands use? What do fraudsters and scammers use in their counterfeit fake false capacity items? Is it worth the effort to repair a fake counterfeit? If you repair a fake, what do you need to know? Why is this information important to buyers and resellers?

There is an old saying – you get what you pay for. Most people including this author have been bombarded with too much advertising over the last 20 years promoting the myth of “more for less”. It has entered our subconscious. There is always a range in price windows but the truth is: “pay less, get less” , “pay more – get more”. Victims of a fake flash devices such as MP Players, USB Flash Drives and Memory Card learn this the hard way. There is a rock bottom air price for everything – go below it and you will not get what you expect. See USB Flash Drives Best Price Bargains Fair Value To Sell Or Buy 8GB 16GB 32GB
The price of an MP Players, USB Flash Drives and Memory Card is not only related to the features the item might have, it is related to the quality of the flash drive chip(s) used. There isn’t a lot of information available to the public on the subject, but the FrankenFlash Project found some on the grading system. It is not exactly the sort of thing manufacturers want people to know. They would prefer consumers ogle the prices, not why the “prices” are what they are.

The following information is being reprinted here from an old site flashdrivedirect.com The new site for flashdrivedirect is now at http://blueloyal.com/ The old site published the information back in 2007. While the flash drive sizes they quoted are dated, the grading system for flash chips has not changed.
Reported by flashdrivedirect:
The Scoop on Chips
USB Flash Chips are divided up into 4 different classes/standards.
Grades A, B & C. And unofficially, Grade D

Grade A:
Tier 1. These are bona fide premium chips with the flash chip manufacturers name & serial number imprinted on the chip itself. These chips are produced by manufacturers such as Samsung and Hynix. They are the most expensive, but also the most reliable offering a lifetime warranty. These are the chips that Flash Drive Direct uses exclusively.

Grade B:
Tier 1 OEM flash chips. These are made by legitimate chip manufacturers but are without the manufacturer’s name imprinted on them. These chips are reliable but are not of the same standards that the manufacturer would consider putting their name on it.

Grade C:
Here’s where the quality issues & problems begin. These will be some of the least expensive flash drives but have a very high failure rate. These chips are called recycled or reclaimed flash chips. They are the chips considered waste from the “wafer” that the original manufacturer does not want and considers to be garbage. These have a 30% – 40% failure rate. They are sold by the pound.

Grade D:
The unscrupulous flash drive supplier will actually imprint an original manufacturer’s name on the Grade C chip. It may read Samsung or Hynix, etc. but is most definitely junk. In a country that is infamous for knock-offs such as jewellery, watches and handbags……..why wouldn’t here be knock-off flash drives?

Payment: All off-shore purchases are pre-paid to a Chinese bank before shipment. What is your recourse if the product fails? A reputable supplier such as Flash Drive Direct gives you protection by US commerce laws and the insurance provided by Visa or MasterCard.
Conclusion: You may find flash drives cheaper than at Flash Drive Direct, but they won’t be better….or even the same! As the old saying goes………The taste of a bargain is easily replaced by the bitterness of being fooled. So if you think you can buy cheaper please go ahead, it is at your own risk. If you want quality please consider working through your distributor and a reputable supplier.
So Grade A chips are used by brand names. They are the best. Consider them the first cold pressing for Virgin Olive oil. The best quality, the most reliable,. The chips that will last the longest and fail the least. They are carefully tested and screened. If a chip doesn’t make it, it goes into Grade B through D.
Grade B chips are still good, but brand name manufactures don’t want their names on them. Says something doesn’t it? But they are good enough for general use and they go to generic no name brands or ohms.
You can expect to pay a lot for any item using Grade A chips. There is a lot of testing overhead factored into the cost. The sorting out for the other two official grades will be factored into the price for finding the best chips. You will find these in well known brand names. So now you know one of the reasons they cost so much. Grade B will be middle of the market and lower end, used for consumers who are price conscious.
Grade C, the bargain basement bin. A target for cheap flash based items. Most of these chips won’t have a long life span. For those wanting to make fakes and counterfeits that pass preliminary inspection this is the quality they will chose.

Grade D is obvious – fake flash fraudster heaven. Profits boundless. SOSFakeFlash has come across a number of flash chips falling into this category. When victims take the item apart it will read a brand name but when they contact the manufacturer with the serial number they are told they never manufactured it. sale. In fact there are subtle distinctions that are a giveaway to the manufacturers of the real items.
Grade A is fine for data storage. Grade B is too, but long term use may lead to problems, so it is best to make sure you have a copy of the data elsewhere at all times.

Grade C and D – that is the flash drive chip quality you have if you found out you have a fake or counterfeit using the testing software H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives
So should you repair it? Well first you need to find the software needed to repair the drive see: About VID PID Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives – Steps To Succeed then you need to see if there is a solution available at http://fixfakeflash.wordpress.com/ If you don’t find one you will have to go to http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/ to read the repair posts and review comments left by victims working on solutions.

During your repair observe the repair process, what size do you get in the end? If it is close to the size reported by H2testw 1.4 (minus the usual formatting overhead) then you got a Grade C or D flash chip that is not too bad. If you have a much smaller drive you got one of the very bad ones in these grades. You can use the repaired drives but we suggest only for data transfers.

What is Nand Flash chips, tier 1 and 2 !

Today I will touch back on the subject of bad flash drives. You may have heard some people talking about flash chip grades or tier 1/2/3 chips. Formally there are three grades for flash chips A, B, and C and unofficially D. All flash chips start their life on a silicon wafer and are cut from this wafer. Chips that have not passed quality control are pushed aside automatically by the machine http://www.usbcustomflash.com/cutting the wafer.

Grade A
Also known as tier 1 flash chips are the best chips available. Grade A chips have the manufacturers name and serial number laser etched on the the flash chip. Samsung and Hynix are the largest producers of Grade A flash. These chips will have a consistently low rate of errors, be much faster than other grades, and last you much longer. Vendors offering these chips will more often than not provide a lifetime warranty on the product.
Seeing that these are the chips we use our custom flash drive orders all come with lifetime replacement warranties.
Grade B
These chips are as reliable as Grade A but do not have the etched serial and name from the manufacturer. Both Grade A and B chips are reliable and have low failure rates.
Now to the lower end products. Stores offering these will never provide any type of warranty on their products seeing that failure is guaranteed.
Grade C
Coming back to the silicon wafer there are two parts that are discarded by the original manufacturers. The portions that have not passed QC and the edges of the wafer. Second hand after market vendors will purchase these parts of the wafer from reputable vendors and resell them to end users. These Grade C chips have a 30% - 40% rate of failure. On rare occasion they can cause system instability, depending on the state of the flash and how the computer is reading/writing data.
Grade D
These are hard to find to be honest but if found beware. Some sly vendors have a laser they use to etch things with... anything. These vendors will purchase some Grade C chips and laser etch them with Samsung's or Hynix's name and serial number and pass them off as the real deal. Failure rates are the same as Grade C but you will be tricked into paying premium prices for these units. Most of these vendors are located in China.
Buyers Guide (list of helpful tips):
* Do not choose a foreign vendor who has a price lower than the rest of the market place.
* Beware all vendors who do not offer you a warranty. If they use Grade A why would they not offer a warranty. If there is no warranty you are most likely being sold cheaper lower grade chips
* Always inquire about the quality of the products. If a sales rep sounds hesitant it may be best to go with someone else.

How to spot tier 1 flash chips or scams.

Everyday I get a number of phone calls from distributors who have conflicting and often incorrect information about the cost of flash drives and what constitutes a worry-free flash drive and one that may fail as much as 30-40%.

I thought it would be a good idea to clear up misconceptions and provide some solid information on promotional flash drives.
At the heart of the problem there is a lot of misinformation about flash drive prices and the cost of memory. A flash drive is made up of 2 cost elements, they are
  1. The memory chip set. These are the chips in the flash drive. It does not include the integrated circuit board, labor to put the chips on the board, the USB interface and the actual housing design.
The chips account for about 70% of the cost of a flash drive. It also costs almost the same to make a 1 GB chip as it does a 128MB chip so that is why there is no big price difference between the two.
Flash drive chips are a relatively new technology and as such there are only a few manufacturers. The most important manufacturer for promotional flash drive chips are those made by Samsung and Hynix.
This is why there is very little price difference between 500 units and 1000 units. The simple fact of the matter is this…..the manufacturers can sell all the chips they make (and more) and have no reason to give anyone a deal (unless you are Apple). Currently the demand for flash chips is far greater than the supply.
  1. The second cost factor is the cost of the housing, circuit board, labor, decoration, assembly and shipping. This accounts for the other 30%.
Many distributors and end-users believe they can buy flash drives at unusually low prices. These prices are generally found online and are often quoted direct from the Chinese manufacturer or through their North American or European agent.
On the Chinese government web site Global Sources if you type in Flash Drives you get over 3700 different results. The reality is there is only about 300-400 actual flash drive factories in China. Flash Drive Direct owns a major portion of one of these.
The other 3300 results are brokers, agents, scammers or just plain rip-off artists. To get listed on Global Sources or Alibaba does not require any background check or legitimacy. All that is required is money.
The reality is that quality memory costs are the same for every legitimate flash drive manufacturer as the demand for chips far outstrips the supply. Flash Drive Direct pays the same for 1000 1 GB pieces of memory as we do for 10,000.
So how is it that there are all these really inexpensive quotes out there? What are you buying? Who are you buying from?
Firstly…..read this article……..ever heard of recycled memory? Here is what it is….the high failure rate waste from the chip “wafer” is sold on a grey market. Last year alone Hewlett Packard sold over 1 BILLION POUNDS of this memory. It is ok for use in a cheap Chinese toy…but do you really want it in a legitimate business tool where a client could lose all their data?

What is a tier 1 flash chip?

Like all types of technology there are products with superior quality, while there are others that are more second-rate. In the case of custom flash drives, there is no exception. The USB industry has its own levels of quality, known as tiers or grades, which define just how good and reliable the USB drive is going to be. Tier 1 is top of the line flash memory, while the lower tiers are more likely to cause errors and other problems with the USB drives.

Of course, all USB flash memory starts out the same; on one giant silicon wafer. Once the wafer is created and etched with intricate circuits, a machine then cuts out each chip. Generally speaking, the chips closer to the edges of this wafer are the ones that tend to be of lower quality. Chips that are cut and do not pass quality control inspections are automatically pushed aside by the machine.

Below are the differences in quality among custom USB drive’s flash memory.
Tier 1
The top of the line chips are called Tier 1, or grade A, and are the highest quality chips you can possibly get. These chips are found just about everywhere and are always laser etched with a serial number and manufactures name. Currently Samsung and Hynix are the largest producers of tier 1 quality memory chips. Tier 1 chips are the best quality because they have the lowest error rates, longest life spans, and are faster than all the other tiers. Lastly, these chips almost always come with a lifetime warranty.

Tier 2
Tier 2 chips are only a slight downgrade of tier 1 chips, but are still good chips to have. These chips are just as reliable as tier 1, have the second lowest error rates, and generally live about as long as tier 1 too. These chips may be etched with a serial number and name of the manufacturer, but it is not uncommon to see tier 2 chips without the etchings.

Tier 3 and Below
Remember those discarded wafer parts I mentioned? Well, tier 3 chips and below are made from these discarded pieces. Second-hand aftermarket vendors buy these discarded pieces from reputable manufactures and resell them to end users. These chips have roughly a 30-40% failure rate and have much lower life expectancies. In some severe cases, these chips have been known to cause system instabilities that can adversely affect the device or computer they’re used in.

Buying Guidelines
So what can you do to make sure you only receive tier 1 chips? Well as mentioned above, tier 1 chips almost always come with a warranty. Second choose a vendor that actually has their prices in tune with the current market prices. Some companies advertise tier 1 chips, but offer them at such a low price that they drastically stand out from the market. The reason they’re probably so cheap is because they are tier 2 or 3 chips, not actual tier 1. Lastly you should always talk to the vendor and ask them what the qualities of the chips are. If the salesman is unsure or is hesitant to answer those types of questions, you should probably go someplace else.

The announcement was made at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference, where SanDisk was demonstrating products.

The Waterproof USB Drive lets consumers and patients carry their medical records (including both text-based and visual information like MRIs and photographs) with them in a rugged yet wearable USB device that can be used with any computer equipped with a USB port. At 55.7 x 19.0 x 7.9 mm and just 11.5 grams, the Waterproof USB drive is small enough to wear comfortably all day on a neck strap or a key chain.

The USB drive has a specially designed cap with a latching mechanism that helps prevent the USB drive from accidentally falling off or becoming lost. This easy-release mechanism allows emergency response personnel to quickly remove the USB drive so that they can plug it into a computer and read the emergency medical file.

The Waterproof USB Drive is targeted at the fast-growing market for portable patient records, due in part to the national initiatives underway in Healthcare IT. The Waterproof USB Drive will enable patients that use personal health records (PHR) to easily carry their emergency medical information with them at all times. Depending on the PHR being used, the emergency medical file can be accessed by emergency room personnel if the person is unconscious. A password provided by the patient to authorized medical personnel can unlock the patient’s full medical record.

A survey conducted in 2004 by Bearing Point found that over 50 percent of respondents would be interested in carrying their medical records on a portable device that could be readily accessed by any computer during an emergency.

“Wearing or carrying the Waterproof USB Drive will give consumers the comfort of having their health records with them at all times, whether they’re at home, work, traveling or simply working out,” said Ed Cuellar, director of marketing in SanDisk’s Emerging Markets Business Unit. “Providing quick access to emergency medical information will lead to enhanced quality of care, which is the key reason the Waterproof USB Drive was developed.”
